How AI Monument Recognition Works (Explained Simply)
You snap a photo of a statue, a building or a painting, and in a few seconds you have its name, history and curiosities right in front of you. It looks like magic, but there's a precise process behind it. Here's what actually happens, no jargon.
1. The photo becomes a digital fingerprint
When you take the shot, the app doesn't "look" at the image the way you do: it turns it into a numeric representation of its distinctive traits — shapes, proportions, architectural or pictorial details. It's the same principle used by the most advanced computer vision systems in the world, applied to art and monuments.
2. Matching against a database of artworks and places
That fingerprint is compared against an archive covering monuments, artworks and historic sites all over the world — from the Colosseum to the Eiffel Tower, from Sensō-ji Temple to the Sagrada Família. The system calculates how closely your photo matches each entry in the archive and returns the most likely match, with roughly 98% accuracy.
3. Generating the story
Once the subject is identified, a second model generates the description — in the mode you chose (Historical, Narrator or Gossip) and directly in your language, from the 7 available. It's not an automatic translation of a fixed text: each description is composed on the spot, which is also why you can regenerate it in a different tone with one tap, without retaking the photo.
Why it needs a connection (except in pre-downloaded museums)
Matching against the archive and generating the story both happen on external servers, not on your phone — that's what makes recognition accurate even on rare subjects. That's why real-time recognition needs a data connection. If you already know which museum you're about to visit, though, you can get around that in advance: the Offline Museums feature pre-downloads every artwork before you lose signal.
